Dr. Sarena von der Heyde
As a child, I grew up in war-torn rural Zimbabwe, helping my mother and grandmother practice traditional healthcare for people and animals alike. My grandmother bought me my first pony when I was only two years old. It was love at first sight. By the age of four I decided to be a veterinarian. Horses soon became a passion and a very successful endeavor as I competed for many years. Growing up in untamed Africa, with animals all around me, set the stage for my career in veterinary medicine.
I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. An extensive surgery and ambulatory internship at the prestigious Ocala Equine followed vet school. I worked as an equine practitioner in Sarasota and added holistic treatments to further help the horses. I have completed advanced training in Veterinary Traditional Chinese Medicine through the Chi Institute. The Chi Institute is world renowned for the quality and rigors of its studies and the high standards of its graduates. I have studied many aspects of holistic medicine including: Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, Food Therapy, Tui Na, Bowen Therapy, and Tension Release. By following my dream to become an animal healer and completing a life-long series of stepping stones, I have become an integrative veterinarian.
I believe the body knows it is one unit, and is designed to be healthy, balanced and to perform optimally. We must realize that the whole body is so much more than the sums of its parts. My job is to try and guide the body back to the most harmonious state possible using the methods best suited to that individual at that time.
I grew up with traditional herbal medicine in Africa, and have always felt that “alternative” medicine is the root of my love for helping animals. I am passionate about enhancing equine wellness and performance, through a holistic approach.
As an experienced doctor of veterinary medicine, I understand the importance of not just past experience, but continued education when it comes to providing the best care for your beloved animals. Years of dedicated work in my field isn’t the end of the story by a long shot—I believe wholeheartedly in staying current with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine by taking classes and attaining new certifications. I’m constantly trying to learn more!
